Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Weminuche Wilderness spans over 499,771 acres in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado and is part of the San Juan National Forest. Known for its rugged and remote terrain, the area offers a raw wilderness experience with high peaks, alpine lakes, and dense forests. It supports diverse ecosystems, from subalpine to alpine zones, with wildlife including elk, black bears, mountain lions, and the elusive lynx. The wilderness was designated in 1975 to preserve its natural conditions. The area provides pristine opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and fishing, with the famous Continental Divide Trail traversing the region. Notable features include the picturesque Chicago Basin, known for its challenging access and stunning views, and Vallecito Reservoir, offering fishing and water sports. The wilderness is attractive for those seeking adventure and solitude away from more crowded national parks.
